Painting and upcycling furniture is a great way to update old pieces and add a pop of colour to your home. In this post, we show you how to do a quick, creative chair upcycle with a fun autumn theme. This project is perfect for eco-conscious DIYers who want to give their furniture a fresh new look. Let’s get started!

Chair upcycle

Autumn theme chair upcycle

An Autumn theme chair upcycle is a great way to add a touch of seasonal flair to your home décor. The first step is to prepare the chair by removing the old upholstery and staples. Next, sand and clean the chair to create a smooth surface for painting. When choosing colours for this project, we consider using autumn-themed hues such as deep reds, golds, and yellows.  With a little bit of creativity, you can easily transform an ordinary chair into a stylish and eye-catching piece of furniture.

The chair had a drop in seat pad it was covered in an old vinyl. As it was in sound condition and we decided to use a decoupage paper on it. The paper we chose was Autumn Clearing. We recommend that decoupage paper is used on a light surface to make the colours pop so we painted the seat cushion white before starting on the decoupage.

We applied the paper using our Infusor. Once you place the paper on you do have a little worktime. Smooth the paper out with a Posh Chalk Smooth and Blend brush starting in the centre to remove any air bubbles. When you’re satisfied apply another coat of Infusor to seal it all in. Once dried our decoupage papers top coated with our Infusor is strong enough to be used for general use. It dries down hard to the surface and is tough.

The decoupaged chair pad was left to dry, we painted the chair frame with Posh Chalk metallic paste using a water mister to help blend the colours. Starting with the darkest colour at the bottom of the chair the metallic paste went on like a dream. Once the metallic paste was dried it was on to adding the WoodUbend Moulding! Our metallic pastes are super hardwearing once dried and there is no need to add an additional topcoat.

How to add WoodUbend to a Chair

For this chair upcycle we choose WoodUbend moulding 1266 , we thought it would make a statement on the back support of our Autumn theme chair. To easily adapt the WoodUbend moulding we simply marked out the places to cut, heated it up with a heat gun and, using a craft knife, cut away the excess. This is the fastest, simplest and safest way to trim or reshape a WoodUbend moulding. Our mouldings go soft and pliable when heated meaning cutting is super fast and effortless. We used the WoodUbend trim TR721 to frame the moulding on the back of the chair.

How to apply WoodUbend Moulding in 5 simple steps

  1. Heat the moulding using a heat gun, hair dryer or electric griddle
  2. Apply glue to the surface or back of the moulding
  3. Stick the moulding into place
  4. Reheat the moulding whilst in place
  5. Press the moulding tight to the surface to ensure complete adhesion

When the first part of the trim was in place we adhered the centrepiece moulding to the back of the chair following the same five steps. We used planks of wood and clamps to keep the moulding in place whilst it cooled ensuring that it kept the perfect shape and then added the rest of the trim. Using a craft knife we trimmed the edges of the moulding and sanded them down to make them rounded and therefore more comfortable.
