In this blog post, I’ll guide you through the exciting process of creating a stunning design board using the incredible range of WoodUbend mouldings and Posh Chalk products. Prepare to be inspired and unleash your inner artist!
The Foundation for Design
To begin my design board, I first had to prepare my wood canvas, which would serve as the foundation for my artistic expression. I applied a base coat of Dark Sand by Magic Paint, carefully using a Posh Chalk Smooth & Blend Brush to ensure perfectly even coverage. This brush is truly fantastic for achieving a flawless finish, and I highly recommend it for any project requiring smooth paint application. I allowed the first coat to dry completely, to speed up the process I force dried the surface with a heat gun. This little trick is a great time-saver, especially when you’re eager to move on to the next step!
After the first coat was dry, I applied a second layer of the Dark Sand by Magic Paint, building up a rich, solid base that would make the subsequent layers of my design truly pop. Achieving a perfectly smooth surface is crucial, especially when you’re planning to add intricate details later on, so I gently sanded the entire area. This step might seem a bit tedious, but trust me, it’s well worth the effort for the impeccable final result.
Stencilling Magic with Posh Chalk
With my base ready and perfectly smooth, I moved on to strategically sectioning the board. I carefully used painter’s tape to divide my board into three distinct areas: a central focus section and two equally sized outer sections. This thoughtful division creates a visually balanced and appealing layout. Thinking about and planning the composition at this early stage is absolutely essential for achieving the stunning design board you are imagining.
Next came the truly exciting part: stencilling! I precisely positioned my Posh Chalk Apache Medium Premium Stencil in the central section. The Apache Medium stencil boasts a beautiful, intricate design that instantly added a touch of elegance and sophistication to the board. Using a Posh Chalk Stencil Brush, I stippled Vivre la Mer by Magic Paint onto the stencil, slowly building up the colour with precision.
The Posh Chalk Stencil Brush is absolutely perfect for this technique, ensuring crisp, clean lines and preventing any unwanted paint bleed. One of the best things about Posh Chalk stencils is their exceptional reusability. This allowed me to perfectly fill the entire central section with the captivating design, creating a stunning and undeniable focal point for the whole piece.
Elevating My Design
Once the central section was complete, I moved on to the outer sections to continue building the visual narrative of my design board. I painted both of these outer areas with Vivre la Mer by Magic Paint, again utilising the reliable Posh Chalk Smooth & Blend Brush for a consistently flawless finish. The vibrant blue of the Vivre la Mer paint created a beautiful and striking contrast with the foundational Dark Sand, instantly establishing a dynamic and engaging colour palette across the entire surface.
I then began bringing the outer sections to life with a very similar stencil design. I carefully adhered my Posh Chalk Apache Small Premium Stencil to one of the outer sections. This smaller stencil design perfectly complemented the larger one in the center, ensuring design continuity. Again using my trusty Posh Chalk Stencil Brush, I meticulously stippled Dark Sand by Magic Paint through the stencil. I then repeated this precise process on the other outer section, ensuring a cohesive and beautifully intricate design spread across the entire board. Finally, with a sense of anticipation, I carefully removed the painter’s tape, revealing the truly stunning and perfectly defined stencilled sections. This moment always feels incredibly rewarding!
Integrating WoodUbend Trim
Now, it was time to introduce the star of the show for many of my projects: the incredible WoodUbend elements! I specifically chose WoodUbend Trim TR810 to add a touch of sophisticated elegance and to clearly define the distinct sections I had created on my board. First, I warmed up a coil of the trim, making it incredibly flexible and easy to work with. Then, I precisely cut two strips to match the vertical length of my board, ensuring they would act as borders between my three sections.
To create a custom colour that would seamlessly complement the rest of the design, I mixed Vintage by Magic Paint with just a few drops of Posh Chalk Ebony Noir Colour Kick. This allowed me to achieve a unique, deep tone that added a lot of character. I then meticulously pre-painted both WoodUbend strips with this custom mixture, using a Posh Chalk Mouldings Brush. This specific brush is absolutely ideal for applying paint to the intricate, detailed surface of the WoodUbend trims.
To ensure quick drying and to further enhance their pliability for immediate application, I used a force dryer, which also warmed the trims. This is a fantastic benefit of WoodUbend mouldings – they are heat bendable, allowing you to create stunning curved designs. Although for this project straight lines were my goal, it is always recommended to thoroughly heat WoodUbend Trims or Appliques before application for the best results. I then securely adhered the prepared strips to the board using WoodUglue, ensuring a strong and lasting bond that wouldn’t budge. Finally, I carefully trimmed any excess material, creating clean, defined borders that elegantly separated my beautiful stencilled sections.
Patina Perfection and Lasting Polish
For the grand finale and to add a truly captivating layer of depth and sophistication to my design board, I applied Posh Chalk Dark Brown Patina. I carefully traced it along the outer edges of the newly applied WoodUbend strips. This created a beautiful, subtle shadow effect, which wonderfully enhanced the three-dimensional quality of the overall design, making the trim truly stand out. From there, I feathered the patina out across the outer sections of the board, using Posh Chalk Patina Extending Wax and a Posh Chalk Wax Extender Brush.
This technique achieved a beautiful shaded effect, giving the entire piece a sense of history and character. To unify the look, I also applied the Posh Chalk Patina Extending Wax to the middle section, tying the whole design together and providing a cohesive, professional, and luminous finish. Remember, you can experiment endlessly with different Posh Chalk Patinas to achieve truly unique and captivating effects – the possibilities are immense!
