Check out our creative transformation of an MDF Board into a Unique Masterpiece!

We’re thrilled to share our journey of a creative transformation – a plain MDF board into a stunning work of art. We’ve used a combination of paints, decoupage and mixed media techniques to bring this piece to life. With just 7 steps, we’ll break down the process into manageable sections, allowing you to easily replicate the look and achieve your own unique masterpiece.

Step 1: Base Coat & Crackle

The first step in the creative transformation of our MDF board is to apply a base coat of Vintage by Magic Paint. This paint provides a rich background that will serve as the foundation for our masterpiece. To create an even more unique texture, we’ll follow up with a layer of Craquel by Magic Paint. This is designed to crackle as it dries, adding texture and a vintage feel to our project.

Step 2: Decoupage

Next, we’ll use the Posh Chalk Posh Tea Time Decoupage for the centrepiece of this project. To create a more authentic, distressed look, we rip the edges off the decoupage using a water pen. This will give our design a sense of age and history and help with colour blending later.

Before applying the decoupage, we’ll add a layer of Cotton by Magic Paint behind it. As the decoupage is made from high-quality rice paper it is somewhat translucent, so using a white paint such as Cotton will enhance the colours of the decoupage. This will really make them pop and also allows the crackles to show. Once the layer of paint had dried and crackles had formed we then applied a first layer of Posh Chalk Pigment Infusor in order to adhere the decoupage to the board. Then we smoothed it down starting in the middle, removing any wrinkles or bubbles using a Posh Chalk Smooth & Blend Brush to ensure a seamless finish. Afterwards, a second layer of Posh Chalk Pigment Infusor was used to seal the decoupage onto the surface. As it is an outdoor grade sealant this also provides protection from anything your project may end up being exposed to.

Step 3: Blending Colours

The next step is to blend the colours from the decoupage into a beautiful background for the rest of the board. We did this with a mix of Magic Paint’s Pepper Blue & Olivia and a Posh Chalk Wax Brush as this combination seemed like the best match for the colours already present in the decoupage’s background.

Step 4: Stencilling

With our background now complete, we pre-painted the WUB1245.26 and WUB1586 appliques with Lemon Gold & Orange Gold Posh Chalk Pigments then left these to dry. Then, as we had decided to use the Posh Chalk Posh Chandelier Stencil to create a decorative border for our project, we mounted it on the area of the board we had just painted using a spray glue. Using a Posh Chalk Premium Finishing Trowel to ensure the application is equal, we stencilled on some of our Pearl Gold, Light Gold & Shiny Gold Posh Chalk Metallic Pastes blending them together as we went. After this we used a heat gun to cause the stencilled-on paste to puff up before flattening it with the Finishing Trowel to create an interesting textured effect. This process is repeated multiple times to fill the edges of the board to create a border around our decoupage centrepiece. We were really beginning to feel our creative transformation taking place!

Step 6: Appliques

Once the stencilling is complete, we can attach the WoodUbend appliques to our board using wood glue. First they are warmed up to make them malleable, then we apply wood glue to them making sure to apply the glue to the entire underside of the applique to ensure it fully adheres. Then to stick them to the board, we press down with even pressure and hold each applique in place for a few seconds. Often this will cause some excess glue to leak out from underneath the appliques; this can be easily wiped away with a baby wipe or a wet paint brush. To finalise the application of your appliques, gently heat them again in situ in order to bend or move them to the exact place you would like on your board. Then press down hard once you are happy with their position.

Step 7: Shading & Waxing

The final step in completing our creative transformation project is to add some shading to accentuate our freshly applied appliques. To do this we used the Dark Brown Posh Chalk Patina and a Posh Chalk Mouldings Brush, focusing on the edges of where our appliques are sat. Then to soften the Dark Brown of the Patina, a layer of Posh Chalk Patina Extending Wax was applied to the entire surface using a Posh Chalk Wax Extender Brush. As well as creating this feathered shading effect, the Extending Wax will also act as a protective sealant and give the piece a glossy finish. Finally we used a baby wipe to remove any excess Patina.
