A Deep Dive into Customising a Wooden Craft

Customising a Wooden Craft

Table of Contents

I’ve always been drawn to the idea of taking something simple and turning it into something truly special. So, when I laid my eyes on the Posh Chalk MDF Square Box Wooden Craft, I saw not just a plain wooden container, but a blank canvas brimming with potential. Today, I want to share my exciting journey of customising a wooden craft using the magic of WoodUbend trims and the rich colours of Posh Chalk.

Crafting the Perfect Black Hue

My first step was to establish a strong, dramatic colour for my stencilling. I reached for my can of Magic Paint in the shade Nuit Parisienne, a beautiful deep black on its own. However, I had a specific intensity in mind, a richer, more profound darkness. That’s why I introduced the Posh Chalk Ebony Noir Colour Kick.

Carefully, I decanted a portion of the Nuit Parisienne and began to mix in the Colour Kick, a tiny amount at a time. I stirred slowly, watching as the black deepened and intensified, transforming into the exact shade I had envisioned – a luxurious, almost velvety black that felt both elegant and powerful. This, I knew, would be the perfect canvas for the intricate design I had in mind.

Bringing the Celtic Design to the Side Panels

With my custom black perfectly mixed, my attention turned to the side panels of the box. I carefully positioned the Posh Chalk Celtic Elements Premium Stencil onto one of the sides, ensuring it was centred and aligned just as I wanted. Grabbing my Posh Chalk Stencil Brush, I dipped it lightly into the rich black paint. Instead of sweeping the brush across the stencil, I employed a stippling technique. This involved gently dabbing the brush repeatedly over the open areas of the stencil.

I found this method allowed for a more controlled application, ensuring crisp lines and a beautiful textured effect. I meticulously ensured to only apply the central circular pattern from my stencil. I then repeated this process on the remaining three side panels, taking care to position the stencil consistently on each one, ensuring a cohesive look around the entire box.

Adding Elegance with WoodUbend Trim to the Lid

Next, I focused on the lid, where I planned to introduce the elegant touch of WoodUbend trim. I reached for a coil of the WoodUbend TR721 Trim. Knowing these trims become wonderfully pliable with a little warmth, I thoroughly heated the coil with my heat gun. Once it was flexible, I carefully measured and cut four strips, each precisely the same length as one of the sides of the lid. Accuracy here was key for a neat finish.

With the strips cut, I picked up my Posh Chalk Mouldings Brush and began to paint each one with the same deep black mixture I had used for the stencilling. I made sure to cover every detail of the trim, ensuring a consistent and sophisticated look.

Once I had force dried the strips of trim, it was time to adhere them to the lid. I reached for my WoodUglue, knowing its strong bond would hold the trim securely. Applying a thin, even layer of the glue to the back of one of the trim strips, I carefully positioned it along the very edge of the lid, pressing it firmly into place.

For the corners, I wanted a seamless, professional finish. This required mitring – carefully cutting the ends of each trim strip at a 45-degree angle where they overlap so they could be glued together perfectly and create clean, sharp corners. It took a little patience and precision, but the resulting framed edge on the lid looked incredible. I repeated this process for all four sides of the lid, creating a beautiful border.

Further Embellishing the Lid with Stencilled Details

With the trim in place, I decided to add more of the Celtic design to the lid, working within the framed border I had just created. To give myself more control in this smaller space, I carefully cut apart the Posh Chalk Celtic Elements Premium Stencil, isolating each individual motif – the central circular pattern and the corner elements – onto separate, smaller pieces of the stencil sheet.

Using my Posh Chalk Stencil Brush and the same rich black paint, I first stippled the corner pattern into each of the four corners of the lid, carefully aligning it within the trim. Then, I positioned the circular pattern in the very center of the lid and stippled it in as well. The contrast of the deep black against the original wood of the lid, now framed by the black trim, was really starting to come together beautifully.

Assembling the Foundation: Securing the Box Structure

Now that both the side panels and the lid were decorated, it was time to assemble the box itself. I carefully aligned the edges of the side panels with the base, ensuring a snug fit. Applying a generous and even amount of WoodUglue to the joining edges, I pressed the pieces firmly together and held them in place until I could feel the glue beginning to take hold. I worked my way around the box, ensuring all the joints were secure and the box was structurally sound.

Adding Cohesion: Trim on the Side Panels

To create a sense of visual harmony and echo the trim on the lid, I decided to add the WoodUbend trim to the side panels as well. I repeated the familiar process: gently warming the coil of the TR721 trim then carefully measuring and cutting strips that match the length of the side panel edges. Then, using my Posh Chalk Mouldings Brush, I painted these strips with the same deep black.

Once they were force dried, I applied a thin layer of WoodUglue to the back of each strip and adhered them to the edges of the side panels. However, this time, I made sure to exclude the top edge of each side panel. This was crucial to ensure that the lid would still sit comfortably and securely on top of the box without being obstructed by the trim.

The Final Flourish: A Touch of Metallic Elegance

Finally, to add a touch of subtle shimmer and visual interest, I reached for the Posh Chalk Blue Prussian Metallic Paste. Using a clean Posh Chalk Mouldings Brush, I applied a thin wash of the metallic paste over all the decorated surfaces of the box – the side panels and the lid. I loved the way the blue shimmered against the deep black.

To enhance the stencilled designs further, I took a soft baby wipe and gently dabbed away some of the metallic paste specifically from the stencilled areas. This revealed the rich, matte black underneath, creating a beautiful contrast and making the intricate Celtic patterns stand out even more dramatically against the subtle blue sheen. The result was a box that felt both elegant and uniquely handcrafted.

Behold My Creation!

Looking at the finished box, I feel a real sense of accomplishment. What started as a simple MDF box has been transformed into a piece with depth, texture, and a touch of timeless elegance. The intricate Celtic patterns, framed by the beautiful WoodUbend trim, and the subtle shimmer of the metallic paste against the deep black – it all came together even better than I had imagined. This project was a joy from start to finish, and it truly showcases the incredible potential of Posh Chalk and WoodUbend products. I hope my journey inspires you to pick up your own Posh Chalk MDF Square Box and start customising a wooden craft to your own liking! What story will your customised box tell?
