Hello everyone! I’m thrilled to welcome you to my latest creative journey, where I’ll be diving into the fascinating world of texture and creating an antique aesthetic. In this step-by-step guide, I’m going to walk you through using Posh Chalk’s Crackling Paste, Extra Flexible Paste, Colour Kicks and the Prism Premium Stencil. So let’s roll up our sleeves, get our materials ready, and start transforming an ordinary canvas into an exquisite work of art!
Step 1: Pre-Painting & Prep

To kick things off, I prepared my trim by applying a base coat of Nuit D’amour. This rich, deep colour would later contrast beautifully with the various elements I was planning to create. I had already applied a base coat of Nuit D’amour and a layer of Posh Chalk Crackling Gel to my canvas so they could both cure naturally. It’s especially essential to let the Crackling Gel dry completely to ensure effective crackling later.
Now, let’s talk about the method for pre-painting the trim. I found it worked best to unfurl small sections of the trim at a time for ease of application. I applied the Nuit D’amour by Magic Paint on the exposed section with a Posh Chalk Mouldings Brush, ensuring an even coverage. Once I finished a segment, I carefully dried and warmed it with a heat source to keep it malleable, making it easier to work with as I moved to the next section. I continued this process until the entire length of trim was painted but remained coiled—this way, it would be easier to manipulate later.
Step 2: Crackling Paste Application

With our trim prepped and the layers of Nuit D’amour and Crackling Gel dry, it was time to introduce the star of the show: the Posh Chalk Crackling Paste. This product is essential for creating that antique aesthetic we are aiming for. I decanted some of the Crackling Paste into a pot and started mixing in a few drops of Posh Chalk Royal Indigo Colour Kick, a stunning blue that adds depth and richness to our mixture.
As I stirred the mixture, I realised it wasn’t quite the shade I wanted. Gradually, I added more Royal Indigo and just a touch of Aegean Ocean Colour Kick to balance the tone. After arriving at the right hue, I was excited to see how it would interact with the crackling gel beneath.
I then poured the coloured Crackling Paste onto my canvas. Pouring it randomly across the surface like I did created an organic feel that mimicked the irregularities typically found in an antique. Using a Posh Chalk Premium Finishing Trowel, I spread the coloured paste, intentionally avoiding an even application. This uneven texture is key to creating the illusion that it has naturally aged over time, which is what we want for our antique aesthetic.
As I covered the majority of the canvas, I noticed I was running low on my initial mixture. No worries—I quickly decanted more Crackling Paste, tinted it with the Royal Indigo Colour Kick, and filled in the gaps to add depth and complexity. Leaving some areas uncovered—especially toward the edges—allowed the original Nuit D’amour base coat to peek through, enhancing the layered effect that was so quintessentially antique.
Once satisfied with the coverage, I used a heat gun to force dry the Crackling Paste. Almost immediately, tiny fissures began to form, creating that delightful crackled effect characteristic of aged surfaces. It was mesmerising to watch the transformation unfold right before my eyes!

Step 3: Stencilling

The next step in this creative adventure was stencilling. For this part, I chose the Posh Chalk Prism Premium Stencil, which aligns perfectly with our antique aesthetic. To colour the Extra Flexible Paste, I decanted a portion into a separate pot and added Posh Chalk Rich Ochre Colour Kick. I mixed it carefully, adding drops until I achieved the perfect sun-kissed golden hue.
Once my coloured paste was ready, I gently spread it onto the stencil using the Posh Chalk Premium Finishing Trowel. Initially, I opted for a thin layer; this allowed me to drip a few drops of the Rich Ochre Colour Kick directly onto the surface through the stencil. The high pigmentation of the colour meant I only needed a small amount for a significant effect.
After spreading the mix across the stencil, I pulled back the stencil to reveal the design. I was elated to see the unique texture and colour contrast emerge. Because I was using the Extra Flexible Paste, it puffed up beautifully when heat was applied, creating a stunning bubble-like effect. This then allowed me to flatten the design, creating a unique textured effect.
I repeated this stencilling process, carefully aligning and securing the stencil in a diagonal row from the top right to the bottom left of my canvas, creating a continuous pattern. Since these stencils are fully repeatable, it made the task quick and efficient. I always made sure to clean my Finishing Trowel in between uses to maintain the integrity of the design and avoid any mishaps.

Step 4: Trim Application

With the stencilling complete, it was time to bring my pre-painted trim into the mix. I warmed the TR735 trim with a heat gun until it became malleable and easy to manipulate. The step is essential—if the trim isn’t warm enough, it won’t adhere well.
Using my canvas as a guide, I carefully unfurled two segments of the trim and cut them to size. To secure one trim section, I applied WoodUglue to its entire footprint before pressing it along the outer border of my stencil pattern. I used the heat gun to warm it again in situ then pressed down gently, ensuring a firm adherence.
Once the first section was firmly in place, I turned my attention to the second piece of trim. I warmed it until it became pliable, repeated the process of applying glue, and secured it to the canvas in the same manner. After both sections were adhered successfully, I trimmed off any excess that hung over the edges.

Step 5: Shading

The last step in my project involved adding some subtle shading to complete the antique aesthetic. I started by applying a minimal coat of Posh Chalk Patina Extending Wax across the entire surface of the canvas using a Posh Chalk Wax Extender Brush. This application serves to provide a protective finish and enhances the depth of colour across our piece.
Next, I grabbed a small paintbrush and delicately applied Posh Chalk Dark Brown Patina around the edges of the canvas and along the outside edges of the trim. This offers a rich contrast that emphasises the layers I’ve created, drawing the eye in.
Following the application of the dark brown patina, I layered another coat of Patina Extending Wax over the entire canvas using the Wax Extender Brush. This is done to feather the shading, softening the stark edges and creating a more subtle effect. Importantly, I didn’t apply the Patina inside the sections of trim where my stencil pattern lay, ensuring those areas remained vibrant and colourful.
Finally, I used a paper towel to wipe away any excess wax from the surface, ensuring everything looked polished and ready for display.

Conclusion:
And there you have it—the final product is an intricate piece that beautifully captures the antique aesthetic of a relic discovered in a now dilapidated grand building. The combination of the layered crackle, the 3D stencilling, and the warm tones together conjures that delightful old-world charm I had hoped to achieve.
