Ready to transform your furniture, crafts, and home decor with stunning stencilled designs? I’m excited to share three of my favourite stencilling techniques. These methods use Posh Chalk Premium Stencils and companion products to add depth, dimension, and dazzling finishes to your projects. Whether you’re a seasoned crafter or just starting, these techniques will inspire and guide you. Let’s get started!
Subtly Blended Stippling
This technique is perfect for creating soft, harmonious colour transitions within your stencilled designs. It allows for vibrant hues to coexist with a gentle blend where they meet, giving a professional and artistic touch.
Here’s how I do it, and how you can too:
I start with a blank canvas, ready for a touch of artistic magic. I carefully position my Posh Chalk Nautical Knots Premium Stencil – its intricate design is just waiting to be brought to life!
Next, I pick up my Posh Chalk Premium Stencil Brush and dip it into Posh Chalk Violet Metallic Paste. Using a stippling motion (gently dabbing the brush up and down), I begin to apply the paste to the stencil, being mindful to leave some gaps for my other colours. This ensures each colour has its moment to shine. Stippling allows for a controlled application, ensuring crisp lines and a slight textured effect.
Then, I grab separate Posh Chalk Premium Stencil Brushes for Posh Chalk Blue Fhthalo Metallic Paste and Posh Chalk Green Fhthalo Metallic Paste. This is crucial to prevent the colours from blending too much on the brush itself. I continue stippling with these colours until the entire stencil design is beautifully filled.
The moment of truth! When I carefully pull back the stencil, the results are stunning. I can see distinct, vibrant colours with only a subtle and beautiful blend where they meet. The effect is truly eye-catching.
Pro Tip: Having a few Posh Chalk Premium Stencil Brushes on hand makes this technique much easier, allowing you to switch between colours seamlessly.
Blended Trowelling
If you love the look of textured designs with a gorgeous metallic gleam, this technique is for you. Blended trowelling creates natural-looking streaks and variations, adding significant depth and character to your work.
Follow along as I walk you through the process:
I place my Posh Chalk Classical Trellis Premium Stencil securely on my chosen surface. This elegant pattern is perfect for showcasing the blended trowelling technique.
With my Posh Chalk Premium Finishing Trowel in hand, I scoop up some Posh Chalk Brown Van Dyke Metallic Paste. I begin to spread it evenly across the surface of the stencil. As I work, I make sure to consistently wipe my trowel clean between applications. This is important to avoid imperfections and maintain a smooth application. The trowel helps to ensure equal distribution and prevents any directional marks in the finish.
Next, I start to apply Posh Chalk Black Carbon Metallic Paste using the exact same method. This is where the magic of blending truly happens! As the two pastes met, they blended in certain areas, creating natural-looking streaks of the two colours in the finish, without completely losing their individual identity.
For the grand finale, I apply a small amount of Posh Chalk Pearl Gold Metallic Paste. Using the same trowelling technique, I focus on key areas, ensuring there are small, delicate streaks of gold that aren’t overpowering. This subtle touch really elevates the metallic shine.
When I pull back the stencil, the result is magnificent! The metallic sheen of the pastes is undeniable, with beautiful blended textures that add incredible dimension to the classical trellis design.
Colour Kick Dripping
For those who love an organic, artistic finish, our Colour Kick dripping technique is a must-try. This method creates unique blends of colour with areas of natural translucency, making every piece truly one-of-a-kind.
Here’s how I achieve this effortlessly artistic look:
I start by positioning my Posh Chalk Leafy Palms Premium Stencil onto a blank canvas, ready for an exciting burst of colour.
My next step is to spread Posh Chalk Glass Plaster across the entire stencil using my trusty Posh Chalk Premium Finishing Trowel. The goal here is an even distribution, creating a smooth base for the colours.
Now for the “kick”! I carefully put a single drop each of Posh Chalk Aegean Ocean Colour Kick and Posh Chalk Dandelion Yellow Colour Kick in different places on my stencil. The beauty of this technique is the freedom to place them wherever you like.
With my trowel, I then spread the colour across the entire surface of the stencil. This action allows the Posh Chalk Colour Kicks to naturally mix and marble with the Posh Chalk Glass Plaster.
Once I am satisfied and carefully pull back my stencil, the design reveals a stunning mix of yellow, blue, and green shades across the design. The effect is beautifully organic, looking naturally occurring rather than rigidly designed. What’s more, there are small areas where the Posh Chalk Glass Plaster remains unpigmented, creating captivating translucent accents.
